Leading from the front, CM completes his half marathon with aplomb

SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 2: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today flagged off the second edition of the Kashmir Marathon from Polo View, Srinagar, marking a vibrant celebration of fitness, resilience and the indomitable spirit of Jammu and Kashmir.

The race began at 6:00 AM from Polo View, with runners traversing the scenic Boulevard Road along the banks of the Dal Lake. The marathon was organised by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir, featuring multiple categories including the Full Marathon (42 km), Half Marathon (21 km), and shorter runs for amateurs and local participants.

This year’s edition saw over 1,100 runners from 27 States and Union Territories of India, along with 77 foreign participants from 11 countries, underscoring Kashmir’s emergence as a premier destination for sports and adventure tourism.

The Chief Minister was joined at the flag-off ceremony by Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty, MLA Zadibal Tanveer Sadiq, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary to the CM Dheeraj Gupta, ACS Tourism Ashish Verma, Director Tourism Kashmir Raja Yaqoob and other senior civil and police officers.

The dignitaries, along with enthusiastic locals, cheered the runners as they set off on their route through the heart of Srinagar.

In a display of personal commitment to fitness and public engagement, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also participated in the Half Marathon and successfully completed the 21-kilometre run in just over one hour and fifty minutes.

Later, sharing his experience on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister posted:

“Just completed the Kashmir Half Marathon. I didn’t set a personal best but I did improve on my effort last year. Congratulations to all the runners who completed the full marathon & the half marathon. Well done.”

It may be recalled that during the first edition of the Kashmir Marathon held on October 20 last year, the Chief Minister had also flagged off and completed the half marathon event.

Speaking at the event, Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty said, “People are running for Kashmir and for India. It’s beautiful to witness the excitement among people of all ages. I am delighted to be here and will try to return every year to encourage greater participation.”

Expressing gratitude, Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Satish Sharma said:

“This marathon spreads the message of peace, love, prosperity, and brotherhood. Participants, including runners from different countries, are part of this celebration of unity and endurance. I thank Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, actor Sunil Shetty, and everyone who contributed to making this event a success.”


SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 02: The Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha felicitated the winners of Kashmir Marathon-2025 in Srinagar today. The Full & Half Marathon, 42 KMs and 21 KMs respectively, was organized by the J&K Tourism Department and 1100 runners from 27 States, Union Territories and 11 foreign countries participated in this mega international event in the Union Territory.

Addressing the participants, Marathon enthusiasts and officials, the Lieutenant Governor said that the soaring spirit of 1100 runners is a testament to Marathon's ability to unite them and strengthen the brotherhood through shared experiences.

"Within two years since its launch, Kashmir Marathon has become one of the most prestigious running tournaments in the country. It has infused a sense of pride and passion among people and inspiring a new generation of runners. I am confident that in the near future, the Kashmir Marathon will boost further interest and participation and it will be a major economic catalyst for our tourism sector," the Lieutenant Governor said.


Emphasising the importance of Kashmir Marathon and significant transformation achieved by J&K UT since 2019, the Lieutenant Governor told the International participants that positive change has been made possible under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

"Jammu Kashmir is a crown jewel of India with rich heritage and vibrant culture. It is a paradise on earth known for its natural beauty and ageless ideals of humanism, communal harmony and peace. I am grateful to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for the historical transformation in this land to build a Jammu Kashmir, which harmonizes modernity and spirituality and today it is moving forward with unwavering passion and resolution," the Lieutenant Governor said.

He also called upon the people of J&K to utilise the opportunities Kashmir Marathon is offering to showcase the UT's potential to the world.

"Let us use this international event to showcase our priceless cultural heritage, arts and crafts and our unique traditions. Let this great running spectacle become a powerful medium for highlighting and showcasing the change and our achievements. Let us use this event to project our handicraft, handloom and tourism sector on the global stage," the Lieutenant Governor said.

Chief Secretary, Shri Atal Dulloo; Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma; Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Shri Anshul Garg; DIG Central Kashmir Range, Shri Rajiv Pandey; SSP Srinagar, Dr GV Sundeep Chakravarthy; Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Shri Akshay Labroo and senior officials of civil and police administration were present.

Film actor, Shri Suniel Shetty; prominent citizens, sportspersons and youth in large number also attended the felicitation ceremony.
