Kochi, December 21, 2025 – The Malayalam film industry and fans across Kerala bid a tearful goodbye to veteran actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Sreenivasan, whose last rites were performed with full state honours at his residence in Kandanad, Udayamperoor, near Kochi on Sunday morning.
Sreenivasan, aged 69, passed away on December 20, 2025, at Tripunithura Taluk Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties while being taken for routine dialysis. He had been battling prolonged age-related illnesses for several years.
Hundreds gathered at his home to pay final respects, including prominent figures from the film fraternity such as Prithviraj Sukumaran, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Dileep, Suriya, Parthiban, Renji Panicker, and director Sathyan Anthikad. Politicians and members of the public also joined in mourning the loss of a cinematic icon. The Kerala Police accorded a guard of honour, and his elder son, actor-director Vineeth Sreenivasan, lit the funeral pyre in the presence of his wife Vimala and younger son Dhyan Sreenivasan.
In a poignant gesture, director Sathyan Anthikad placed a pen and paper on Sreenivasan's body, symbolizing his unparalleled contributions as a writer.
Born on April 6, 1956, in Kannur, Sreenivasan appeared in over 225 films across five decades, often portraying the common man with sharp wit and social satire. His screenplays for classics like Nadodikattu, Sandesham, and Varavelpu redefined Malayalam cinema, blending humour with profound commentary on society.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called his death an "irreparable loss," praising Sreenivasan's ability to reflect everyday struggles through laughter and insight. Tributes poured in from Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and others, hailing him as a transformative force in Indian cinema.
Sreenivasan's legacy endures through his sons Vineeth and Dhyan, both active in the industry, and his timeless films that continue to resonate with audiences.
