Jammu: Under the supervision of Prof Garima Gupta, Head Department of Journalism and Media Studies and guidance of Prof Dushyant Kumar Rai, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Jammu, organized an insightful guest lecture on “A Comparative Analysis of Media in Tanzania and India”.
The distinguished speaker for the event was Dr. Angel Kasonta, Assistant Professor at the University of Dodoma, Tanzania, East Africa.
Dr. Kasonta, with over nine years of teaching experience and an additional nine years of service as a Communication Officer in the Government of Tanzania, delivered an engaging and informative talk. She presented a comparative overview of the media systems in both Tanzania and India, focusing on aspects such as press freedom, media ethics, digital transformation, and the socio-political role of journalism in shaping democratic discourse.
She emphasized that while both nations differ in their historical and cultural contexts, they share similar challenges in ensuring responsible journalism, maintaining media independence, and adapting to the digital revolution.
Department of journalism and media studies regularly offer students a global lens to understand how media operates as a bridge between governance and the public across different continents.
The session began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Pardeep Bali, who highlighted the growing importance of cross-cultural learning and global engagement in media education. He commended the department’s efforts in creating academic spaces that foster international collaboration and knowledge exchange.
The event was attended by faculty members Dr. Ravia Gupta, Dr Kumerjit Chajgotra, and the stage was managed by Dr. Ramiyan Bhardwaj, along with students of the department of journalism and media studies who actively participated in the interactive discussion.
A formal Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Ravia Gupta, who expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Angel Kasonta for her valuable insights, she also acknowledged the support of faculty colleagues and the enthusiastic involvement of students, noting that such academic engagements enrich the learning environment and promote global perspectives in journalism education.
Students shared highly positive feedback, describing the lecture as “enlightening, globally relevant, and intellectually stimulating.” The session concluded with the reaffirmation of the department’s commitment to advancing intercultural understanding and fostering excellence in journalism and media studies.
