Historic Taliban Delegation Set to Visit India for First Time in Over 30 Years
NEW DELHI – In a significant diplomatic event, a senior Taliban official is scheduled to visit India, marking the first time in over three decades.
The visit is a major step in the cautious engagement between India and the Taliban, who seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021.
The UN Security Council's 1988 Sanctions Committee, which oversees sanctions on the Taliban, approved a temporary travel exemption for Muttaqi.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss India’s continued humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. India has consistently sent shipments of food, medicine, and other relief materials to Afghanistan, including 50,000 tonnes of wheat.
The development has been seen as a shift in India’s foreign policy, as it seeks to protect its interests in a changing regional landscape.
The visit will be closely watched by the international community. The outcome of the talks and any future steps will be important in understanding the evolving relationship between India and the Taliban.
