Jammu, January 29, 2026 — Hundreds of students from Jammu University staged a major protest today, blocking the busy Tawi Bridge in the heart of the city, intensifying their long-standing demand for the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in the Jammu region.
The protest began in the morning and continued throughout the day, causing significant traffic disruption on one of the main arteries connecting different parts of Jammu city. The protesters, comprising law students and supporters from other organizations, gathered in large numbers, chanting slogans.
Police personnel deployed at the scene briefly detained several protesters after they refused to vacate the bridge despite repeated appeals from the authorities. According to local reports, those detained were later released after negotiations.
This protest marks a renewed push in the campaign for an NLU in Jammu, following similar demonstrations, including an attempt to block the same bridge earlier this week. The students argue that Jammu has been neglected in the allocation of premier institutions.
The Tawi Bridge blockade was eventually lifted later in the day, although traffic congestion persisted in the surrounding areas for several hours. Authorities have appealed for calm and urged the protesters to utilize established channels to voice their demands without disrupting public movement.
