ASSAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project in Kaliabor, Assam, on Sunday, January 18, 2026. The significant infrastructure initiative is valued at an estimated ₹6,957 crore. The ceremony was a key part of a broader event where the Prime Minister also inaugurated and initiated multiple rail and road projects aimed at bolstering regional connectivity and development.
The foundation stone laying, or 'Bhoomi Pujan', marks the official commencement of the major project. Announcements preceding the event, including those from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had indicated the government's plans for the corridor, building anticipation for the formal launch. According to an earlier announcement by the Chief Minister, the elevated roadway is planned to be over 32 kilometers long, representing a landmark undertaking for the region's infrastructure landscape.
The Kaziranga Elevated Corridor stands out as a high-value project, with a total financial outlay of ₹6,957 crore as confirmed by multiple reports covering the event. This substantial investment underscores the project's scale and importance. While the primary focus of the day was the corridor, it was part of a larger push for enhancing Assam's infrastructure. Prime Minister Modi's engagement included the virtual flagging off of two new Amrit Bharat trains, further contributing to the modernization of the railway network in the area.
The development initiatives launched on Sunday are poised to provide a significant boost to connectivity within Assam and the broader Northeast region. The Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, along with the newly announced Amrit Bharat train services and other road projects, collectively aims to improve transportation efficiency and facilitate economic activity. The ceremony at Kaliabor was widely covered, highlighting the strategic importance of these infrastructure upgrades. The formal launch of the corridor project transitions it from a planned concept, as announced by state officials earlier in the month, to an active development phase.
