Jammu, November 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a major win in the Jammu and Kashmir by-elections. Devyani Rana, contesting for the first time, successfully won the Nagrota Assembly seat. The counting of votes, which concluded on Friday, November 14, confirmed her decisive victory by a significant margin of 24,647 votes.
Ms. Rana, who is the daughter of the late Devender Singh Rana, secured a total of 42,350 votes, retaining the seat that was previously held by her father. The by-election was called after the unexpected death of Mr. Rana, making this victory a continuation of his family's political legacy.
Devyani Rana, an Economics graduate, faced tough competition. Her closest challenger was Harsh Dev Singh, the veteran leader from the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), who received 17,703 votes. Shamim Begum of the ruling National Conference (NC) finished a distant third with 10,834 votes.
After the result was declared, Ms. Rana expressed her gratitude to the people and the party, saying, “I would like to thank every leader and worker of the BJP... In 2024, Nagrota had given the blessing to Rana sahib [her father], and today, too, the people of Nagrota have blessed me.”
